Sharon McQuade MCMT, RMT
Registered
Music Therapist, Master of Creative Music Therapy
Sharon
trained as a primary school teacher in Adelaide. She has also
performed as a pianist in solo, duo and band work for many
years, both in Adelaide and interstate. She has accompanied
soloists and choirs as well as playing in local theatre productions.
Sharon studied music therapy at the Golden Stave Music Therapy
Centre (Uni of Western Sydney), where the Nordoff-Robbins
approach featured the use of improvisation. This is particularly
valuable as the client needs no music skills and so is widely
practised with people who have disabilities. Instruments such
as drum and cymbal are specifically favoured in this approach.
Since then she has worked in aged care (including palliative
care and psycho-geriatric) and an early intervention program
for parents and toddlers. More recently she established the
music therapy program in the oncology department at the Women
and Children’s Hospital. She currently teaches piano/keyboard
in addition to music therapy.
The
Nordoff-Robbins approach to music therapy developed from the
pioneering work of Paul Nordoff and Clive Robbins in the 1950s/60s.
It is grounded in the belief that everyone can respond to
music, no matter how ill or disabled. The unique qualities
of music as therapy can enhance communication, support change,
and enable people to live more resourcefully and creatively.
